WHEN TO VISIT
WHEN TO VISIT
KwaZulu-Natal works year-round, but each season has its own strengths depending on whether you prioritise bird variety, breeding colour or big game visibility.
Spring (September – November)
Best for: bird activity, breeding behaviour, fresh landscapes
Spring is one of the best all-round seasons for KZN photography. Birds become more active, many species are vocal, and the scenery is vibrant after winter.
Why photographers love it:
Excellent bird behaviour and nesting activity
Comfortable temperatures (great for long shoots)
Green landscapes in forests and wetlands
Strong light without extreme summer haze
Summer (December – February)
Best for: peak bird diversity, lush habitats, dramatic skies
Summer brings heat and humidity, but it’s prime time for migrant birds and maximum species variety. Great for birding-focused tours, especially wetlands and forest regions.
Why photographers love it:
Highest bird diversity and activity
Migrants increase variety and colour
Storm clouds = dramatic backgrounds (when conditions allow)
Considerations:
Midday light can be harsh
Humidity can affect comfort and gear
It can rain, so rain gear is essential for your camera gear.
Autumn (March – May)
Best for: balanced conditions + wildlife photography
Autumn is a sweet spot — still productive for birds, with improving comfort and often clearer air. Many photographers rate this as the most “easy-going” season to travel.
Why photographers love it:
Warm but not extreme
Excellent visibility and softer light
Great mix of bird + wildlife opportunities
Comfortable safari drives in Manyoni
Winter (June – August)
Best for: safari visibility, crisp light, raptors
Winter is outstanding for wildlife photography — thinner vegetation, easier sightings, and beautiful crisp mornings. Birding remains strong, especially in wetlands and along the coast.
Why photographers love it:
Best season for Manyoni safari photography
Clear air and sharp light
Raptors often photograph well in open habitats
Less humidity = comfortable shooting conditions
Considerations:
Early mornings in the Natal Midlands can be very cold -3C (warm clothing essential)
